Talyllyn Railway No.9 “Alf”

Model and Photography by George Williamson

Constructed from parts of two Hunslet mining locomotives, the locomotives that would become Alf previously worked at Huncote Colliery in Lancashire, they arrived on the TR in 1970 and a year later in 1971 the best components of both locomotives were used to create a single useful locomotive named “Alf” after the then NCB Chairman Alfred Robens. Alf has been in continual use ever since on the Talyllyn and otherwise Alf is running well.

The kit utilises the Graham and Farish Drewry Diesel shunter 03/04 chassis which can be rebuilt to move the jackshaft to the middle driving axle. I recommend following George Williamson’s build of this kit as instruction.
