Ruston Hornsby 48DL

Temporary CAD images

A catalogue item of Ruston Hornsby, the 48DL was their 48hp narrow gauge diesel offering, it was an incredibly successful and versatile product with hundreds of locomotives being built over a period of 24 years and being purchased by many different industries to replace older steam shunters or to work alongside them as well as in industries that had previously gone without or with specialist motive power due to flammability concerns.

The locomotives came in three distinct body styles but it was not unusual to find locomotives modified far off the standard look by their operators.

  • Style 1: Pre-WW2 Bonnet and cab
  • Style 2: Ministry of Supply bonnet and cab (400 locomotives ordered by MoS and sold off post WW2 or retained for RNAD/MoD)
  • Style 3: Post-war 1950s “Streamlined” bonnet and cab.

This kit is available in three guises to suit different bodywork styles but also have the option of being ordered with extended frames and flameproofing gear for building a model representative of a loco working in hazardous environments such as a chemical plant or munitions dump.

Separately fitted parts as displayed within the “Streamlined” 48DL model CAD file, separate parts are supplied on a printed raft for the modeller to remove.

All kits are drop on bodyshells for the Toma Model Works “Super slow drive unit” configured for 6mm dia wheels and 14mm wheelbase. Different parts are included in both variations of each kit to represent extra weights and buffer block styles that customers could have fitted to their locomotives.

Price: £25 each
